Madekwe is from a multi-cultural household. Her birthplace was in South London. Both her parents have both been English. She was born in the southern part of London Council Estate, and then was a student at The Brit School aged 14. In London, she studied at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in which her acting diploma was obtained. She appeared on stage in many productions while attending school including the role of King Henry V, as Princess Katherine, and Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.

Ashley Leggat, an actress who was twice nominated for a Gemini Award, hails from a large Hamilton family. Ashley Leggat was a part of Roy and Patty along with her three older siblings, Brett, Todd and Bram and Rob.
